ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance System)

What is ADAS?

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) is a system to automate the vehicle for the comfort and safety of the passengers. ADAS is the new trends of automotive industry. ADAS makes your car driver less. Though, what we have till now, is a semi-automatic vehicle. All automotive giants are putting their efforts to bring their first fully automatic vehicle in the form of mass production.

Features of ADAS functionality:

  1. It will automatically follow the preceding vehicle and always maintain a safe distance to avoid collision. It automatically adopts the spee

d of the preceding vehicle.  Cameras and Radars are sensors for detecting the preceding vehicle.
  2. It detects the lane markings to steer the car automatically. Cameras give the input to determine the lane marks.
  3. It detects the speed limit sign boards automatically and control the speed automatically.
Standard Safety Features:
  • AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking): It detects the object that may collide with the car and control the brake accordingly.
  • Adjust Beam: It adjusts the high or low beam accordingly.
  • LKA(Lane Keep Assist): When the car is going out of the lane , then it gives input to the car and brings back the car in the middle of the lane.
  • DAA (Driver Attention Alert): This functionality is purely implemented for safety. When the vehicle is moving above a certain speed (High Speed) and if the driver loose concentration due to driver fatigue, then it gives alert to driver.
  • Parking Assistance: It will help the driver for hassle free parking.
  • Traffic Assistance:  It assists the driver while driving in city traffic. It follows the front vehicle and stops when the front vehicle stops and wait for few second, if it is not moving then it searches the path to overtake.

Sensors used for ADAS:

Mainly 4 types of sensors are used.
Camera Sensors: There are 3 types of camera sensors. i) Wide camera ii) Main Camera iii) Narrow Camera.
RADAR Sensors: RADAR transmits the radio waves and waits for receiving the transmitted radio waves. Transmitted radio waves reflect back from preceding vehicle or any object and calculate the distance of the object depending upon the time of travelling of the radio wave.
LiDAR Sensors: LiDAR works in the same way like RADAR. LiDAR=  Light + RADAR.
Ultrasonic Sensors: It detects the object using ultrasonic sound. Sonar uses sound waves to detect objects.

Where does AI come into the picture?

ADAS is the new and emerging trends in the automotive world. ADAS is using machine learning and deep learning algorithm to improve the control-ability of the vehicle.

ADAS system takes decision according to the inputs coming from different sensors. But a control system is required to process the inputs and take a decision without any human
interaction. Here the IoT and Deep learning come into the picture. By using IoT, cars will be connected with each other, so data will be taken continuously by n-number of cars and
these information will be fed for taking future decision by using deep learning algorithm. In artificial neural networks, a bulk of data is required to take proper decision and these data will come from the cloud which will be taken continuously by a lots of vehicle.

ADAS is the vast field where AI and IoT is being used to make future generation cars with enormous amount of features.
